Can Moringa leaf be taken by a pregnant woman? I keep getting this question from concerned pregnant women. Today I saw this question again in a group on Facebook and decided to share my research findings about it. So can Moringa leaf be taken by a pregnant woman?

To answer the question, let us look at constituents of the Moringa leaf and consider their health implications to a pregnant woman.

WHY MORINGA LEAF IS GOOD FOR PREGNANT WOMEN
Pregnant women need lots of healthy and highly nutritious foods to boost their immune system, supply the fetus with the required nutrients for proper development, etc. Moringa leaves suppliy all these nutrients in high amounts. The following are selected nutrients highly necessary for pregnant women diet.

1. CALCIUM
Calcium is highly beneficial for the formation and maintenance of your bones and teeth. Your developing infant requires the particular calcium supplement she needs out of your body. To keep your your bones and teeth nutritious, it is advisable to acquire adequate calcium to supplement. That way, your bone  density is taken care of. That also may help prevent high blood pressure which you are prone to have when you are pregnant.

2. CHOLINE
Moringa leaves and pods comprise 423 mg of Choline for every 100 g
Choline Aids in preventing issues inside the spinal cord and brain, termed neural tube defects, and enhances mental faculties growth.
It forms strong bone tissues and could assist in preventing high blood pressure.

3. FOLIC ACID
Folic acid also known as folate facilitates control spinal-cord birth defects during the initial 30 days of pregnancy, prevents the occurrence of miscarriages and premature delivery. Folic acid also prevents anemia.
Others are potassium, vitamin C, other B complex vitamins, vitamin and zinc.

WHY MORINGA ROOTS AND FLOWERS ARE NOT GOOD FOR PREGNANT WOMEN, OTHERS.
Moringa roots on the other hand are NOT RECOMMENDED FOR PREGNANT WOMEN! It is dangerous to ingest moringa roots when pregnant as that may result to abortions. And not only are moringa roots not recommended for pregnant women. Others too should take caution when consuming moringa roots. It is important to remove the ROOT BACK before using the roots for medicinal purposes. The roots contain two substances that are said to be poisonous at some dosage.
Also, as a pregnant and expectant mother, avoid the MORINGA FLOWER. Why bother yourself with the remaining parts of the tree when the leaves can do you a whole lot of good?

WHAT ABOUT EATING MORINGA SEEDS WHEN PREGNANT?
One day, a lady called me and asked a straight question: Dr. Moringa, does moringa seeds cause abortion? I answered her but tried to find out why she asked. Now I quizzed her to know if she deliberately wanted to abort the child. Because some girls would call and request for information on how to abort their foetus using moringa.
What I would suggest is as soon as you discover you are pregnant, PAUSE taking moringa seeds and SWITCH to taking more of the leaves.

HOW  PREGNANT WOMEN SHOULD EAT MORINGA LEAVES
How should pregnant women eat moringa leaves or leaf products?
Moderation is key. Therefore, pregnant women should include moringa leaves to their diet in moderate amounts too. But exactly how many grams should I eat per day? A tea spoon full is ok at a time and three times a day is what I recommend.

WHAT TO DO IF YOU THINK EATING MORINGA LEAVES IS NOT GOOD FOR YOUR PREGNANCY
If for any reason you are not sure if eating moringa leaves while you are a pregnant is the best thing to do, kindly speak with your Doctor for proper advise. Remember that what is good for Johnson may not be for Mary. :)

FINAL THOUGHTS...
Finally, I think it is good to generally eat lots of fresh fruits and vegetables while you are pregnant. These will supply your body with the required nutrients keeping you and your baby healthy.
Do not eat too much for because you are "eating for two". Only eat foods that are twice as nutritious as what you have been eating before. Avoid junks!

  2. I've been reading up on moringa and so far the articles online all sound scary, I'm not pregnant but we are trying to conceive. Is it just the root that can lessen my chance of conceiving or are the leaves also not good while trying for a baby?

    Thanks in advance!

    1. Hello dear Steffi, eating MORINGA leaves in any form: leaf powder, tea, fresh, etc is just OK along eating the seeds. But as soon as you become pregnant, stop the seeds and eat ONLY the leaf products. Avoid the ROOT completely. Don't be scared anymore. Blessings!

  3. Does anyone know if Moringa is ok in topical form if pregnant? There is Moringa oil in my face moisturiser and I'm wondering if I should stop using it if I want to become pregnant.
